| Comments | timestretch is actually a whole 04:30 track, shrunk to about one second. In theory it can be expanded to get the whole track back |

Ok my first try was using some little-known software called Audacity for MacOS and I don't think the results are very relevant.
trial 2:
I tried the resample function with a better known piece of software (Sony Sound Forge 7 for Windoze). What was the result? Nothing. Silence. And it makes perfect sense. A 2700% expansion in legth is great enough so that any audible frequency is stretched out into the infra-sonic range. So dogs might be able to hear it, but we can't. It's just like if you record your friend's voice, slow it down (stretching out a sound is the same as slowing it down. think 'the chipmunks') and play it back. He will sound very deep and low.
It's entirely possible that the original 4m30s clip could have been, say, the answer to life, the universe and everything, but because of the quanitfied nature of digital media, the resampling of information inevitably involves loss of information. "Timestretch" is the equivalent of taking a high-res photo of your family with your digital camera, then reducing the resolution of the photo to 64x64 pixels (this is what resampling essentially means). Your daughter's face will become a pixelated blob. Then take that low-res photo and blow it back up to original size. Is it gonna look like your family again? No. They will be high-res blobs.
My theory is that 'timestretch' is Mat Jarvis' stomache just before dinner time, but we may never know what it reallly is. ▪

can't you stretch or compress the length of an audio track in peak or something?
on a semi-related note, check out 9 beet stretch.....beeethoven's 9th stretched out to 24 hours....there's mp3s and a 24 hour stream....very ambient.

I stretched out the track and it sounded something like Pink Floyd's "On the Run" No hidden messages or clues to the holy grail :( ▪
Rob's been working on it for the last two years. Don't hold your breath! I still have hope it might happen someday... I think he taped it, so it's a big job to write it up etc. ▪
What happened to that interview? ▪
I think it would be farily easy to stretch the track out again, although obviously the sampling frequency will go right down (from CD standard 44.1kHz to about 0.16kHz), but it should still be audible. Just grab the track onto disk, and then use a sound editor such as Cool Edit or SoundForge to stretch it again is my thinking... I've never tried it though. I did speak to Mat Jarvis a while back, in an interview soon to be published, and he said he'd never actually tried it himself.
gas0098 was never released, and never will be. The track 'red green blue' on em:t0003 is originally from this album though. I *think* it's the same track as 'solar', but I'm not 100% sure about that. ▪

I´ve been so intrigued about this track ever since I bought the cd. How the **** do you expand the track from 00:01 to 04:30? Do you anybody know? My guess is that gas has this knowledge. It´s kinda like finding a trail to the holy grail.(of em:t legend)
I am so curious as to how gas2298 sounds. I can even find it on e-bay.
As to what I´m listening to now other than em:t, saafi brothers... ▪
