Yeah, and you just beat me... :/ My original copy got knicked, but I reckon I might be able to get it back... this experience has spurred me on. It's a mighty fine piece of work. ▪

I was given this album several years ago by an ex-girlfriend of mine. She said it was made by a group her cousin (Riad Abji) was in. It collected dust for a while, then I listened to it off and on, falling in love with it gradually. Then I did what most people do with their CDs -- stick my entire collection into a CD wallet and throw away the original cases. Fast forward a few years, I stumble across your site here and learn about all the other em:t albums. Man, I should have kept that original Woob case! ▪

Where woob's first album is one of unmatched splendor and beauty, the overall tone of Paul Frankland's second effort, entitled woob2 4495, is one of dark mysteries and foreboding places.
This time around it seems to be localized in the furthest regions of the African Congo. This is a place where light barely filters through to the earth surface amist a dense canopy of trees. The first track, coincidentally entitled gate, leads us from the edge of the forest into the vastness of dark timber. Paul Frankland, up to his old trick again, litters sound effects throughout to heighten the sense of apprehension while painting an intimate ecosystem of exotic frogs, birds, and mystical natives. The sound collage is less dense this time around but only adds to the uneasiness of the venture through these sparse but beautiful environments. In the middle of all these songs, is a love for dub and tribal rhythms infused with live guitar, percussions and other assorted instruments.
Frankland again skillfully demonstrates that electronic music can be enhanced by the acoustic sound. depart the albums longest and strongest track is also the one most closely related to the ideas expressed on Woob's first album. Little sparkles of sound twinkle as a lone flute and guitar airs their lonely presence in the center of the jungle. A very beautiful piece of music.
4495 does have the tendency of being more introspective but that is its charm. I can't help but think of the "Heart of Darkness" when hearing this work. A definite travelogue through landscapes of the inner self. Overall, this is another strong release from woob and helps to further define the em:t sound. B+ ▪

This album comes in an *almost* normal em:t case - you open it up once, and you get the normal thing, CD on the right, block of black text on the left - then you flip it open again, and there it is... ▪
