Biography
gas is the suitably succinct alter-ego of terse analogue tonemeister Mat P. Jarvis. From his studio high above Nottingham's city centre, this one solitary figure stretches analogue synthesis to it outermost edges, quietly persuading an intimidating array of inscrutable custominsed devices to sweep, hiss and modulate ever more wildly, cheating the equipment's original designers into parting with that extra frequency nugget. If Kraftwerk saw their computerworld as neon-lit and beautiful, gas evokes a more cautionary tale. Low-rent alleys remain in darkness, superhighways come with tollbooths and even cyberspace has yellow lines. Here black japanese boxes are taught a new language. Sounds warp into new and curvaceous shapes, liquid cells shifting continually to suggest a near future of soft technology and molecular machines, their electronics almost echoing the natural world they have so easily replaced. The world of gas is strange and absorbing, but not without its dangers, and deep amidst the whirr of ones and zeros, someone mouns the taming of nature.

Not to be confused with Wolfgang Voigt, also known as Gas. I know a thing or two about those quantum dot semiconductors too, they worked on them in my old physics department :) ▪
first of all what an excellent website. I don't see much em:t stuff around these days, and it always seemed a little mysterious, in origin as much as sound. I would love to get that second Gas recording- but wasn't there also a Gas lp on another label, around 1999? Love to know more about it. ▪

Love the Gas CD, my favourite of the Em:t releases! Was happy to find a Mat Jarvis track (under the name High Skies) on a compilation called 360o from The Foundry last year, and very happy to know that a new track will be on the forthcoming Em:t0003! Now, when will Gas2 2298 be released? ▪

Notes on gas from the em:t '97 press catalogue
first up, the deep space synthesis of gas shapeshifting electronic soundtracks for dreams, nightmares and hallucinations; an imagined near future of soft technology, molecular engines and extremes of miniaturisation.
On magazine add gas to their esoteric hotlist with the expectation that em:t will be at the forefront of labels offering slot-in brain cards as accessories to the listening experience... personal and brave instrumental music. DJ magazine comments: Seductive... brain image circuits run into overdrive on its cool waves of electronic pulses... the ideal soundtrack to a 20 hour I-max film on the total history of space travel.
as gas press references to the potential developments in nanotechnology leave more then one reviewer a little baffled, Fujitsu Quantum Devices, a subsidiary of Japan's largest computer manufacturer, announce their invention of The Quantum Chip, a revolutionary processor which utilises a series of 'zero dimensional' quantum dots, apparently, less than 7 nanometres across...

Above and beyond my favorite artist, not just of the em:t series but of all the music I listen to. I can listen to his music constantly and never get tired of it, plus i always hear something new, every time. Keep it up Mr. Jarvis - LaserBoy ▪

gas 0095 is one of my favourite albums ever, and Microscopic one of my favourite tracks. I'm just patiently waiting for the next gas-Matt Jarvis album. There will be another won't there??? :-) ▪
This is one of my favourite artists. I have also heard Woob and Slim – the later being alright, but not up to the same standards as the other two. I wish I could track down some of the others! ▪
