I am a UK binaural location sound artist. My work is unusual, some say unique, it involves live performance at outdoor locations creating sounds from found objects at the location and listening to the natural ambience. Both listening and performance phases are recorded digitally using custom binaural techniques. The listener using headphones, therefore, has a unique perspective of my perception of the environment and my personal (the artist's) view of my performance. Read more about Dallas Simpson's work. Biography
I was trained as a scientist and worked for nearly 20 years in the pharmaceutical industry and the pathology department of two large hospitals. As a child of the '60s, I've always been a bit of an intellectual rebel. In 1990 a sense of growing frustration of the excesses of rampant materialism and job dissatisfaction caused me to give up my well paid full time job at the hospital and become a teacher and photographic artist, whilst also awakening my interest since childhood in sound recording. In 1995, having had little commercial success with photography, despite having published a number of innovative articles on various techniques, I started to explore binaural recording techniques using, at that time, inexpensive (50 Francs a pair!) sub miniature microphones inserted in my ears. Excited by my results I started to look for a record label and found that t:me Recording existed in Nottingham, my home town, so I took a recording of a bouncing ball recorded under a bridge (the finale of abha) to them. They were equally excited and the rest, as they say, is history.

Following chr:s t.'s recommendation, I got "From Alderney". It's very good stuff indeed, if you liked waterpump at all you *will* enjoy this. I got my copy from Dale Lloyd at and/OAR in the US.
For me Dallas' work represents one of the boundaries in ambient -- is it even music? I'm really glad em:t had the gusto to release his work on a commercial (almost mainstream) album, I doubt I'd have ever heard of it otherwise. ▪

Hi Dallas This is not so much of a comment but rather a question. My mother in Glasgow recently came across a print of a female with a horse's head which had your name on it. Do you recognise this work? Do you sell any of your work? Where would she go if she wanted to know if it was of any value. ▪

Hi All, I'm still actively recording and producing work my own work and work for other artists. My personal archive of location performances well exceeds 50 hours at present, almost all being unreleased. Over the last two years I have been involved with a number of well established UK artists and this year (2002) have released two albums - The Ric Sanders Group - live at Lincoln Cathedral (multimedia including 5 binaural tracks) and DOWN TO THE WOOD(or Martin & Jim go binaural) Martin Stephenson / Jim Hornsby. Pure binaural recording using my custom technique. "Here we offer a new perspective on the nature of performance, the experience is intimate and personal. Join Martin and Jim to share that experience of this binaural recording, made at Shining Cliff Woods in the Peak District. "A day to remember for all concerned, You can't repeat or edit or rehash these events, you just have to meke them happen once, once is enough."" Finally a full binaural recording of virtuoso guitarist Gordon Giltrap, also recorded at Shining Cliff Woods, is due for release in 2003. All the best, Dallas Simpson. ▪
